From February 2009 to May 2010, Graham Group in conjunction with Australian National Builders took part in developing Katoomba Waste Management Facility (KWMF) in Katoomba, NSW.  The KWMF is a Transfer Station Building that provides the waste disposal needs for the upper Blue Mountains Community.  The station is a solid waste management facility which accepts waste delivered in small loads and reloads larger vehicles for transport to a final disposal facility.  This project has made a substantial contribution by upgrading this level of environmental protection by further protecting the ground water, surface water and vegetation surrounding the site.  A benefit of waste management is that it excludes the requirements of burning the waste that can cause health risks to those living in nearby areas.  The new operations will also eliminate odour issues, and greatly reduce dust and litter from the site.

Graham Group’s products: Balltube® handrail, FRP grating, perforated sheet, edge trims and galvanising were used in constructing the facility.  The estimated value of the project was $3.8millon and a range of improvements were done to the KWMF.  A new waste transfer station for sorting and baling waste,; new and improved recourse recovery facilities; upgraded recycling facilities and outdoor, undercover small vehicle tipping facilities were just a few examples.

AS KWMF is a bailing transfer station, residual solid waste will be compacted, and baled.  These bales will be transported to Blaxland Waste Management facility using enclosed trucks, it is estimated that there will be 4 loads of waste transferred to Blaxland WMF each week day.  If the KWMF closed all waste operations, then the residents would have to travel a great distance for all waste disposals.
